Background: Neurokinin A is a member of the tachykinin family of peptides. Like substance P, neuropeptide K and neuropeptide gamma, it is generated by cleavage of the protachykinin 1 precursor. Neurokinin A localises to neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and is particularly abundant in the gastrointestinal tract. The biological actions of neurokinin A are similar to those of substance P, and include vasodilation and stimulation of smooth muscle contraction.
