Background: Alpha B-crystallin is a heat shock chaperone protein, up-regulated by stress. It has been shown to be expressed in the vertebrate eye lens and also found in cardiac and skeletal muscles, the kidney and the brain. Alpha B-crystallin is also found to be a component of Rosenthal fibers and a consistent tissue marker of epileptic foci.
