Background:  The Drosophila melanogaster gene Phantom encodes a product involved in oogenesis. Mutations have been isolated which affect the embryonic cuticle and the embryonic head and are embryonic recessive lethal. Phantom mutants have also been shown to display a posterior contraction and poorly differentiated cuticle.
