Background: This gene was identified on the basis of its stimulationby c-Myc protein. The latter is a transcription factor thatparticipates in the regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. The exact function of this gene isnot known but studies in rat suggest a role in cellularproliferation and c-Myc-mediated transformation. Two alternativetranscripts encoding different proteins have been described. Catalyzes the cleavage of the N-glycosidic bond of deoxyribonucleoside 5'-monophosphates to yield deoxyribose 5-phosphate and a purine or pyrimidine base. Deoxyribonucleoside 5'-monophosphates containing purine bases are preferred to those containing pyrimidine bases.
