Background:  ASZ1 contains six ANK repeats and one SAM (sterile alpha motif) domain. It may act as a cytoplasmic signal transducer that mediates protein-protein interactions during germ cell maturation in both males and females and also during preimplantive embryogenesis. ASZ1 is expressed exclusively in the testes and ovary and at higher levels in the adult testes compared with the adult ovary.
